China Earthquake Aid

To assist victims of China’s recent earthquake, Berkeley Lab’s Asian Association is sponsoring a donation drive. A club representative will staff a table in the cafeteria during the noon hour every day next week. Cash or checks will be accepted. The funds will be forwarded to reputable charities, such as the Red Cross and Chinese Consulate in San Francisco. Staff can also go here for more information and to donate online.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Operating Hours
For Peet's Coffee Bar

Due to lack of business, the Peets Coffee Bar will no longer be open on weekends. Also, the daily operating hours will now be 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting Tuesday, May 27. Other changes include a price increase on selected items in the café, resulting from the escalating cost of fuel and commodities. Comments or questions can be sent here.

New Supercomputer Topic
Of Tech Review Video

Berkeley Lab research announced earlier this month on embedding low-power microprocessors in supercomputers to improve global climate change predictions has received much press coverage, including a story and video in MIT’s Technology Review webzine. The video includes interviews with scientists Michael Werner and Lenny Oliker (Computational Research Division) and John Shalf (NERSC). Go here to view the story. In related news, a story on a recent summit during which climatologists called for massive investment in computer resources to improve modeling capabilities was recently covered in Nature. Use Caution During Current Heat Wave

With the forecast calling for high temperatures over the next few days, Lab staff are encouraged to take the following steps to stay cool and safe: wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing that allows free movement of air over the skin's surface; drink plenty of water; and eat a light lunch. Those experiencing the onset of a heat-related condition should contact Health Services (x6266). In emergency situations, call the Fire Department (x7911). For more information on heat stress, go here.
