Icing on the
IceCube Cake
On March 17 Berkeley Lab's IceCube Project— some 30 people from five divisions including Nuclear Science, Engineering, Physics, IT, and NERSC— gathered to celebrate a major milestone in the IceCube neutrino telescope now under construction at the South Pole, which consists of some 80 strings of Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) buried over a mile deep in the Antarctic ice. Berkeley Lab designed and produced the DOMs, including the "main boards" that preprocess data from event detections. All the main boards, over 5,600, are complete, and 2,560 modules are already in the ice, 99 percent of them working perfectly. Read more here.

Optional Holiday
Cesar Chavez Day
Eligible employees have the option of using Cesar Chavez Day, Friday, March 28, as a paid holiday, with approval from their supervisor. Employees using the floating holiday for Cesar Chavez Day will be required to use a third vacation or leave-without-pay day during the winter holiday shutdown. See the "Limited Floating Holiday Implementation Guidance" website
for information on eligibility and time-entry procedures. Laboratory policy concerning holidays is contained in the Regulations and Procedures Manual (RPM), Section 2.10.

Blue Cross to Change
Name, Logo
On April 1, Blue Cross of California will be changing its name
to Anthem Blue Cross. How will this new branding change impact currently enrolled Blue Cross members? The Blue Cross Website URL will change,
however the old URL will continue to work until December 2008.
The logo on ID cards will change. Current members should continue to use their current ID cards until they are reissued in late August. While the name and logo will be different, the benefits offered under the plan will remain the same. If you have any further questions, please contact the Lab’s Benefits office at ext. 5557.
EBuy Orientation Kicks Off With Vacuum Products
An orientation for the Laboratory’s eBuy direct-order purchasing solution for high and ultra-high vacuum components from Nor-Cal Products will be held this Friday, from 10-2 p.m. in the Advanced Light Source Lobby, Bldg. 6. All Laboratory employees are invited to attend. Demonstrations will be provided on how to order directly from your desktop using the fast and easy eBuy procurement process. Representatives from Nor-Cal Products will be there to showcase new products and answer any questions.
