Cray Wins NERSC
Supercomputer Contract
DOE’s Office of Science has announced that Cray Inc. has won the contract to install a next-generation supercomputer at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), located at Berkeley Lab. The systems and multi-year services contract, valued at over $52 million, includes delivery of a Cray massively parallel processor supercomputer, code-named "Hood." Also provided are options for future upgrades that would quadruple the size of the system and eventually boost performance to one petaflops (1,000 trillion floating point operations per second) and beyond. Cray will begin shipping the new supercomputer to NERSC later this year, with completion of the installation anticipated in the first half of 2007 and acceptance in mid-2007. Full story.

Fire in Berkeley,
Lab Responds
Berkeley Lab's firefighters assisted the city of Berkeley's fire department Wednesday afternoon to combat a three-alarm apartment fire on Hillegass Avenue. Four city firefighters and two civilians suffered minor injuries. "We were thrilled we were able to help out," Berkeley Lab’s fire chief Gary Piermattei said. The Lab’s engines answer calls from the city on a regular basis, but a three-alarm fire of this severity is unusual, he said. Read more here.

Don’t Forget Predictions For Lab in Year 2031
Employees now have two ways to submit their predictions about what life will be like when Berkeley Lab turns 100 in 2031: send your predictions here, or drop them in the box provided in the lobby of the Cafeteria. The future visions will be included in a time capsule that will be sealed at the Founders Day picnic on Aug. 26, to be opened at the Centennial ceremony in 25 years.
