Employee Sets Up
Katrina Food Drive

Deborah Martin, with the Lab's Human Resources office, has organized a food drive in conjunction with Operation Ryan's Hope to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Staff are asked to donate non-perishable food items, which will be delivered to affected areas in the South. Drop-off points have been set up in the cafeteria and Buildings 69-229, 76-222, 943-275 (OSF), and 003-146 (Calvin Lab). Boxes will be picked up every Friday through October. Alley at Buildings 58,
46 Closed Tomorrow

The alley road from Building 58 to the Building 46 complex will be closed to all traffic tomorrow so that air conditioning units can be installed on the roof of Building 46.

Berkeley Lab's Synthetic Biology program and its leader, Physical Biosciences Division Director Jay Keasling, were featured Tuesday  night in a special segment of KTVU Channel 2's ongoing science series "Cutting Edge." Reporter John Fowler visited the Berkeley West Biocenter on Potter Street and spoke to Keasling about his work in developing biological solutions to combating diseases like malaria and cancer. Nobelist Bishop to Give
Biosciences Talk Friday

Nobel Prize-winning biomedical scientist J. Michael Bishop, who is Chancellor of the University of California's San Francisco campus, will present the Biosciences Distinguished Lecture at Berkeley Lab tomorrow. Sponsored by the Life Sciences Division's Postdoctoral Society, the talk will begin at 3 p.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium, followed by a reception, to which all employees are invited. Bishop, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology/ Medicine in 1989 with colleague Harold Varmus, will speak on "Mouse Models for Human Cancer."

ESnet Hosts Workshop
For Collaborators

The Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), housed at Berkeley Lab, will host its second collaboration meeting for users, engineers, and managers from all DOE/ESnet research centers.
