Sharing the Lab's Story
At the Solano Stroll

With sunny skies overhead and the slightest nip of fall in the air, thousands converged in North Berkeley last Sunday to attend the Solano Stroll, an annual event that features crafts, food, and entertainment. Among the activities was a Berkeley Lab booth where 16 employees volunteered their time to disperse information about the Lab's research and community outreach efforts. Four Berkeley Lab scientists are taking part in the second annual Climate Change Research Conference, to be held tomorrow through Friday in Sacramento. The conference is sponsored by the California Energy Commission and the California Environmental Protection Agency. Larry Myer will chair a carbon sequestration session, at which Sally Benson will discuss the potential for carbon sequestration in geological formations in the West. In another session focusing on climate change impacts and adaptation studies, Norm Miller will discuss heat extremes and energy demands. Eric Masanet will give a talk on estimation of Green House Gas emissions from products manufactured in California. Go here for more information.

Shuttle Buses to Return
To 10-Minute Intervals

Transportation services listened to its customers and its employees. As a result, effective next Monday, the Berkeley Lab Hearst Street and on-site bus routes will change trip intervals from every 12 minutes to every 10 minutes. The bus drivers indicate that construction on and off site has stabilized so that they can maintain the every-10-minute schedule for most of the day. Also remember the new boarding policies — when curb-side turn signals are flashing, the bus is ready for boarding; when the street-side signals are flashing, the door will close and not reopen until the next scheduled stop. To ensure safety, do not run for the bus unless the curb signal indicates the driver has seen you and it is safe for you to board.

Lab Tennis Tournament
Today and Tomorrow

The Lab's annual Tennis Club tournament will be held today and tomorrow, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Hearst Courts on Bancroft Way, near Bowditch St. It is open to all employees, their families and guests. Those interested in participating should contact Csaba TothT (x5338).

Cholesterol Expert
To Speak Thursday

As part of National Cholesterol Month, Cathy Luginbill of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center will speak Thursday on "Truths and Myths of Cholesterol: The Impact of Weight Loss, Exercise, and Medication." The talk begins at noon in Building 937's third-floor conference room. She will also speak on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at noon in Perseverance Hall.

Of Campus Colloquium

The Lab's Earth Sciences Division is co-sponsoring a semester-long lecture series with UC Berkeley's Water Resources Center Archive.
