South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds got an additional $19.9 million from the state legislature for the Homestake underground laboratory proposal. Now, scientists must be persuaded to bring experiments to a closed gold mine in Lead, SD. The state now has a total of $35.6 million for the project. The money will be used to open and operate a laboratory 4,850 feet underground at Homestake. Berkeley Lab physicist Kevin Lesko is leading a consortium of more than 60 scientists nationwide who are supporting Homestake as the site for the National Science Foundation's deep lab. Planning has begun for the Lab's annual holiday craft fair, which will take place on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Employees who would like to sell their wares at the fair should contact Robin Mitchell (x4141) to register for a booth. Participants are asked to donate one item for a free prize drawing.

Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless will have representatives in the Cafeteria lobby today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. They can answer questions on discounts, promotions and equipment for personal use by Lab employees. Employees who need to make changes to their benefits plans can do so during Open Enrollment, which begins Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 8 a.m. and ends Wednesday, Nov. 30, at midnight. The Contemporary Physics Education Project (CPEP) is a non-profit organization of teachers, educators, and physicists located around the world, including Berkeley Lab. Its posters, charts, and web features present the current understanding of the fundamental nature of matter and energy, incorporating the major research findings of recent years. During the last ten years, CPEP has distributed more than 200,000 copies of its material. The UC San Francisco BioEntrepreneurship Center hosts a talk with social entrepreneur David Green, who will discuss his strategies for "compassionate capitalism," on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. on the UCSF campus. Green's talk is part of the center's "Scientist to CEO" series, which features life sciences industry leaders who started their careers as researchers. The cost is $20.
