Underground Lab
Funding Approved

Lesko

South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds got an additional $19.9 million from the state legislature for the Homestake underground laboratory proposal. Now, scientists must be persuaded to bring experiments to a closed gold mine in Lead, SD. The state now has a total of $35.6 million for the project. The money will be used to open and operate a laboratory 4,850 feet underground at Homestake. Berkeley Lab physicist Kevin Lesko is leading a consortium of more than 60 scientists nationwide who are supporting Homestake as the site for the National Science Foundation's deep lab. They will submit their proposal next June. Full story.

Out Physics Posters

The Contemporary Physics Education Project (CPEP) is a non-profit organization of teachers, educators, and physicists located around the world, including Berkeley Lab. Its posters, charts, and web features present the current understanding of the fundamental nature of matter and energy, incorporating the major research findings of recent years. During the last ten years, CPEP has distributed more than 200,000 copies of its material. Berkeley Lab employees can donate to the group, and many more, through the SHARES campaign, now through Nov. 18. To learn more about SHARES, go here. To make online contributions, go here.
