Lawrence Badash, a UC Santa Barbara history of science professor, will present a talk on Albert Einstein's social influence and activism, and the trouble it sometimes caused him, tonight at 7 p.m. in Berkeley High School's Schwimley Little Theater. 'Road Show' Will Offer
Creative Services Info

The Creative Services Office — home for high-quality illustration and design, web site development, photography and video, technical writing and editing, and printing — will be demonstrating its services today in a "Road Show" display in the cafeteria lobby. From 11:45 a.m to 1 p.m., representatives from each functional area will be on hand to describe the job process, from cost estimate to completion, as well as demonstrate previous contributions such as publications, posters and Internet sites.

When a fire started in the dry grass near the Bldg. 71 trailers on June 29, the people working nearby noticed and responded. While buyer Carol Avellino called x7911 to summon help, the others (carpenters Tom Bennett, Steve Campos, and Blair Mordecai; custodian Noah Bullock; Chemical Sciences researcher Jason Maddi; and AFRD staffer Ji Qiang and guest Sekazi Mtingwa) pitched in to fight the fire. Nine fire extinguishers and four five-gallon bottles of water were discharged and the fire was nearly extinguished when Alameda County firefighters arrived. The quick-thinking volunteers were honored with spot awards in a ceremony at the Firehouse on Oct. 7.  

SHARES Campaign
Off to Strong Start

Twenty-seven Berkeley Lab employees have contributed a total of $7,790 to the 2005 Berkeley Lab SHARES charitable giving campaign as of last Friday. The campaign, which started Oct. 14 and runs through Nov. 18, supports the Lab's commitment to reach out to surrounding communities and help organizations that depend largely on donations. Employees can donate to 18 local charities dedicated to science and education outreach, as well as energy conservation. New Audio Conference
Service at the Lab

In an effort to reduce costs, Telephone Services is providing a new audio conference service to the Lab at a 70 percent lower per-minute rate, effective Nov. 1. In addition to the cost savings, users will also be able to schedule their own teleconferences 24 hours a day, without having to submit a request. Users are assigned a 20-party audio conference account with a toll-free number. International callers must use a toll number. Larger audio conference accounts can be set up, as needed.
