Be Alert; Wildland Fire Season in Full Swing
The onset of serious wildland fire conditions low humidity, high temperatures and off-shore winds are a reminder to all Berkeley Lab personnel to exercise caution and be alert to fires in the hills. As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Environment, Health and Safety Emergency Preparedness Program is using this time to remind employees of its efforts to reduce fuel levels in and around the site and of staff responsibilities in the event of a wildland fire. Go here to learn more about preparations for the fire season.

NMR on a Chip Helps
Analyze Water Makeup
A team of scientists with Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley has demonstrated a means by which Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, one of the most powerful analytic tools known to science, can be made compatible with microfluidic "lab-on-a-chip" devices. This demonstration, led by NMR authority Alex Pines, holds great promise for biomedical research, the detection of biohazards and toxic chemicals, and other endeavors in which the chemical composition of a fluid must be determined. It involves the use of remote NMR detection, a technology developed by Pines and his group. Full story.

Meet Ann Maris, a structural biologist with the Lab's Physical Biosciences Division. When not at work, Maris likes to write poetry, an endeavor she has pursued since childhood. Recently, she's branched out artistically by creating altars, a form of visual expression often used for Day of the Dead festivities to honor family and friends who have died. Last year, Maris built a shrine for Punkin, her 19-year-old cat. This year, her altar will deal with the recent loss of her father, a close friend, and a colleague. The piece will be included in a San Francisco exhibit from Oct. 14 to Nov. 5.
