Runaround This Friday

Don't miss Berkeley Lab's SHARES Runaround this Friday at noon. This marks the second year of combining the Runaround with the launch of the SHARES charitable campaign, which supports surrounding communities and organizations that depend on donations. The campaign runs from Friday through Nov. 18, and gives employees the opportunity to donate to any agency designated as a tax-exempt IRS 501(c)(3). Employees will receive a packet in the mail this Friday with more information. Also on Friday, employees can visit a SHARES information table on the cafeteria lawn after the Runaround. Be Alert; Wildland Fire Season in Full Swing

The onset of serious wildland fire conditions — low humidity, high temperatures and off-shore winds — are a reminder to all Berkeley Lab personnel to exercise caution and be alert to fires in the hills. As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Environment, Health and Safety Emergency Preparedness Program is using this time to remind employees of its efforts to reduce fuel levels in and around the site and of staff responsibilities in the event of a wildland fire. Caulobacter crescentus

Caulobacter Divides In
Its Own Special Way

Caulobacter crescentus, a single-celled water bacterium long considered to be an ideal model for studying asymmetric cell division, follows its own path to divide. Berkeley Lab life scientists Kenneth Downing and Luis Comolli were part of a team that used cryoelectron tomography to produce unique 3-D images of a dividing Caulobacter cell. The images showed that, contrary to what has been seen in other bacteria, the cytoplasm of the daughter cells is divided well before the two cells are released from one another. Xenon NMR signal

A team of scientists with Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley has demonstrated a means by which Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, one of the most powerful analytic tools known to science, can be made compatible with microfluidic "lab-on-a-chip" devices. This demonstration, led by NMR authority Alex Pines, holds great promise for biomedical research, the detection of biohazards and toxic chemicals, and other endeavors in which the chemical composition of a fluid must be determined. It involves the use of remote NMR detection, a technology developed by Pines and his group. Full story.

Maris's altar to her cat Punkin

Maris

Meet Ann Maris, a structural biologist with the Lab's Physical Biosciences Division. When not at work, Maris likes to write poetry, an endeavor she has pursued since childhood. Recently, she's branched out artistically by creating altars, a form of visual expression often used for Day of the Dead festivities to honor family and friends who have died. Last year, Maris built a shrine for Punkin, her 19-year-old cat. This year, her altar will deal with the recent loss of her father, a close friend, and a colleague. The piece will be included in a San Francisco exhibit from Oct. 14 to Nov. 5.

Karats Jewelry Sale In Cafeteria Wednesday

Employees can purchase bracelets, rings, necklaces and other quality jewelry items from Karats from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the cafeteria. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted for payment. Employees receive an additional 10 percent discount. The event is sponsored by the Lab's Employee Activities Association.
