Lab's 'Segway Guy'
Featured in Local Paper

Dupray
Michael Dupray, with the Lab's Environment, Health and Safety Division, employs a unique mode of transportation for his commuting. His Segway — a two-wheeled, battery-powered, gyroscopic machine — turns a lot of heads as he travels from his Pleasant Hill home to the BART station, then up to the Lab each day. It also caught the attention of Contra Costa Times reporter Mike Adamick, who wrote a feature story on Dupray for the front page of yesterday's paper. Go here to read the Times story, and here to read a View article on Dupray written in January.
DOE UPDATE

Roadmap for GTL Biology
Research Published

Magnified view of cellulose
The Department of Energy has issued a comprehensive plan, "The Genomics GTL Roadmap," which will explore the unseen world of microbes to produce the new science needed for achieving cleaner and more secure energy resources, remediating toxic wastes and understanding the natural roles microbes play in the global climate. Microbial enzymes could, for example, be used to improve the manufacture of ethanol from cellulose by replacing the inefficient and expensive processes used today. Full story.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

October Is Energy
Awareness Month

The Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) is again this year helping the Lab observe Energy Awareness Month with conservation tips for the home and office. This year's theme is, "Not in Use? Turn Off the Juice!" Facilities energy analyst Syed Ali will be in the Cafeteria lobby during lunch throughout next week, dispensing Energy Awareness Month information and other freebies. Go here for more information.

Lab Streets to Get
Cleaned Tomorrow

A convoy of sweeping trucks will descend upon the Lab tomorrow to clean streets, parking lots and walkways around the Hill, starting at 5 a.m. Employees are asked to make sure Lab vehicles are not parked too close to buildings, trash containers or shrubbery, so the trucks can maneuver in these areas. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to use caution when near these trucks, as their visibility is limited. Questions can be directed to Bob Berninzoni (x5576).

Got News? We'll Help You Share it With Lab

The editors of Today at Berkeley Lab can help departments and individuals spread important news about conferences, research, awards, and other activities. Know an interesting person who works here? Send along that information as well so we can share their story with others. Story ideas can be e-mailed here.
