CUE Union Sets Strike
For Next Week at UC

Leaders of the Coalition of University Employees (CUE) labor union have announced their intent for members to strike at University of California campuses and Berkeley Lab next Monday through Wednesday. The union represents about 240 employees, primarily clerical, at the Lab. The University of California has issued a statement that this would be an unlawful action, since impasse has not yet been declared by either party in contract negotiations. Go here for UC answers to employee questions regarding the proposed strike. Further information will be provided in tomorrow's edition of Today at Berkeley Lab.

POLICY UPDATE

New Smoking Policy Requires Proper Disposal

The Lab's new smoking policy, announced in TABL on January 25, requires all employees, guests, contractors, and visitors to be responsible for the safe disposal of their cigarette butts or other smoking materials. With drier weather, it is especially important to make use of the Lab's outdoor ash cans. Go here to view the new smoking policy (RPM Section 2.23(J) and instructions on how to obtain outdoor ash cans or request an EH&S review. The web page "Smoking" is also available under "S" in the Lab's A-Z index.

Lab's Salmeron Pitches Science to Hispanics

Salmeron

In a series of informational spots recorded for the Hispanic Radio Network, Berkeley Lab Materials Scientist Miquel Salmeron encouraged young Spanish-speaking listeners to pursue a career in the sciences. The series, produced in conjunction with the Department of Energy, is called the "Camino al Futuro" (road to the future) and includes the three Salmeron segments: A Great Adventure, Revolutionary Power, and Job Satisfaction. Go here to read the scripts in Spanish and English.
