Better Three-Dimensional
Tissue Models Created

Bertozzi

A hot topic in organic chemistry is the development of ways to neatly home in on a particular chemical group and cause a reaction to proceed extremely efficiently under mild conditions. Such highly optimized reactions have been grouped under the term "click chemistry." Click chemistry has all sorts of uses, although few are in biology because the technique relies on toxic metal catalysts. However, Berkeley Lab Molecular Foundry Director Carolyn Bertozzi recently demonstrated copper-free click chemistry in a living system. The technique allows real-time imaging of cell surface molecules that are otherwise impossible to achieve. Full story.

HEALTH AND WELL BEING

Active-For-Life Program
Starts Up on Monday

Atomic Hippos, Healthy Nuts, Hearts-a-Pumpin’, Losers-R-Winners, Pennachio Group, Rack-Em-Up, Smooth Operators, SPO, Step-It-Up, The Rechargers…these are just a few of the Lab teams joining Active For Life, a fun, 10-week wellness activity starting on Monday. Last year, 230 employees joined. Those who want to join a team or start their own can contact the Health Care Facilitator’s office (x6997) for more information.

Good Nutrition Key
To Life-Long Health

The Health Care Facilitator’s office wants to remind employees that spring is the perfect season to highlight the importance of good eating habits.  Try to keep meals interesting, with a variety of foods, featuring fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free milk products, lean meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. For example, choose water over soft drinks, top baked potatoes with nonfat yogurt instead of sour cream, and ask for salsa or mustard instead of mayonnaise. Go to here to learn more.
