Daniel Chemla, a physicist recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on the optical and electronic properties of materials, a leading advocate for nanoscale science, and the man credited with making Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source one of the nation’s premier scientific user facilities, has died. He was 67. Chemla passed away in his Kensington home yesterday. Four years ago, he suffered from a stroke and had been battling a series of health problems since. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by family and friends, including his wife Berit. Go here to read a full obituary. A remebrance of Chemla will appear in the March 28 issue of The View.
Chu, Colleagues Meet
With Pelosi in D.C.
Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu, along with Persis Drell of SLAC and Thom Mason with Oakridge Lab, met with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi during a visit to Washington D.C. last week. “The message we delivered to the Speaker was simple,” explains Chu. “We wanted to say thanks for her support of basic research.” They also told her that a broad national commitment to scientific research and innovation was necessary, he said. Go here to read a letter from Chu that includes additional details on the group’s visit with Pelosi as well as with other Congressional representatives and staff.
