Western Utility Response
To Emission Regulation

Researchers at Berkeley Lab have released a report assessing how 15 western electric power utilities are preparing for possible future regulation of carbon dioxide emissions in their resource planning. The researchers found diversity in the approaches taken by western utilities, but that most have taken significant steps to evaluate the financial implications of future carbon regulations for their long-term resource strategies.  The study was conducted by Galen Barbose, Ryan Wiser, Amol Phadke, and Charles Goldman, all with the Electricity Markets and Policy Group in Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division. New Software Allows License Transfer

A new "transfer software" capability has been added to the IT Division’s software download site. This function is useful for those who want to move software to a new computer or workgroup colleague. Go here for more information. Go here to subscribe to receive the latest software download news. The most recent addition to the site was Adobe Creative Suite 3 for Macintosh computers.

Alarming Growth in China
CO2 Output, Says Study

The growth in China's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is far outpacing previous estimates, making the goal of stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gases even more difficult, according to a new analysis by economists at UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. Previous estimates say the region that includes China will see a 2.5 to 5 percent annual increase in CO2 emissions. Full story.

Ergonomics Team Offers
Break Reminder Software

Employees experiencing computer-related discomfort can use RSIGuard by Remedy Interactive, a new break reminder program with a full complement of animated stretches designed to minimize discomfort and help people stay more alert. Offered by Berkeley Lab’s ergonomics team, the break-timer software monitors work patterns and encourages stretch breaks when they are needed. Staff can also customize break schedules and stretches based on preferences. Go here to get started.

Nonresident Tax
Workshop March 20

The Lab’s Payroll and International Researchers and Scholars Offices will conduct a Nonresident International Tax Workshop on Thursday, March 20, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. An overview of tax forms, tax treaties, and resources for international scholars, students, and researchers will be provided.  Attendees can also get answers to visa questions relating to nonresident taxation issues.

Next Lab Blood Drive
Takes Place March 25

Berkeley Lab’s Philanthropy Club will be hosting a blood drive on Tuesday, March 25, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be parked near the Cafeteria that day. Go here to make an online appointment. For more information, contact Heather Pinto (x4181).
