Joint Stem Cell Research

Two leaders in biomedical research — UC Berkeley and Stanford — will join forces in a new stem cell initiative that will catalyze research and serve as a magnet for scholars from around the world. The Siebel Stem Cell Institute is a joint initiative between the Berkeley Stem Cell Center and the Stanford Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Institute, two of the world's leading institutions at the forefront of biomedical science. Summit: Chu to Speak

The National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering is sponsoring a two-day summit to examine the increasing importance of energy policy to the nation's security, economic vitality, and environment. The summit, intended to stimulate discussion among experts with diverse points of view on energy issues, will inform a study under way called "America's Energy Future: Technology Opportunities, Risks, and Tradeoffs." Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu will speak today on “A Sustainable Energy Future.” A live webcast of the summit is available. Full story.

Cancer Society Gives
Bissell Medal of Honor

Bissell
Berkeley Lab Distinguished Scientist Mina Bissell, with the Life Sciences Division, has received the American Cancer Society’s Medal of Honor. The award is the highest bestowed by the society. Bissell was recognized for her research on microenvironmental influences on gene expression and tissue specificity in normal and malignant breast tissue.

Joseph Hager, with Fidelity Investments Tax-Exempt Services Company, will conduct a workshop on “Achieving a Sound Retirement” Monday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. Hager will be available from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria lobby to answer questions.
