RESEARCH UPDATE

Lab Leads Updgrade
Of ALICE Collider

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), a huge detector for studying nuclear collisions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, was already under way when builders opted to add a calorimeter to rapidly trigger and measure high-energy quark-gluon jets. Berkeley Lab is the lead U.S. institution of ALICE's international Electromagnetic Calorimeter collaboration (EMCal), with construction recently approved by DOE. Thomas Cormier of Wayne State University, a guest in the Lab's Nuclear Science Division (NSD), is Project Leader, Joseph Rasson of Engineering is Technical Coordinator, and NSD's Peter Jacobs is a member of the Project Management Board. Read more here, from the next issue of Science@Berkeley Lab.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Vacuum Supplies Now
Available On eBuy Site

Beginning Thursday, Lab staff can purchase vacuum supplies via eBuy from Norcal Products, Inc. Thousands of items will be available from the supplier’s catalog at highly competitive prices. Users of vacuum products and components are urged to browse the Norcal catalog and take advantage of institutional savings. Go here to access eBuy. It is also available through the BLIS portal (under Lifeline Applications) and the Procurement homepage. LDAP login and valid project ID numbers are required for ordering.

New Reports Submission
System Starts Tomorrow

Starting tomorrow, Berkeley Lab authors and collaborators who produce or contribute to scientific or technical reports can use a new streamlined Reports Submission System to facilitate contractually required submissions of reports to the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information and to the California Digital Library.  The old system will be available to complete reports with previously assigned numbers until March 30. Go here to learn more about the benefits of the new system.

SPECIAL EVENT

Friedman Talk Today;
Simulcast to Two Sites

Friedman

New York Times writer and acclaimed author Thomas Friedman will present a lecture at the Lab today on “Green: The New Red, White and Blue.” The talk begins at 4 p.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. Because space will be at a premium, overflow from the Building 50 Auditorium should head to Perseverance Hall to view a simulcast of the lecture. Those near the Building 66 Auditorium can go there to watch the event. Because parking will be impacted, staff are encouraged to use the Lab shuttle service for traveling to and from these locations.
