Three Scientists Join
Engineering Academy

Three Berkeley Lab researchers are among 65 new members elected to the National Academy of Engineering, considered one of the highest professional distinctions for an American engineer. New members include Enrique Iglesia (Chemical Sciences) for his contributions to the understanding of catalyst structure-function relationships, the development of novel catalysts and leadership in the field of catalysis; Robert Sawyer (EETD) for his work in reducing energy consumption, improving the environment and for contributions to our understanding of air pollution; and James Sethian (Computational Research) for the development of efficient methods of tracking moving interfaces. Go here for more information.

EETD’s Sartor Works
With India on Efficiency

Sartor at awareness workshop in India

Dale Sartor of Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division spent a week in India last month working with industry and government representatives to discuss improving energy efficiency of Indian data centers. Sartor’s visit was funded by the Department of Energy and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Sartor visited Indian data centers, and attenced a an awareness workshop in New Delhi to develop solutions and a framework for further activity, including training, benchmarking and developing incentives for improved data center efficiency. Go here for more information.

Energy Symposium
On Campus March 7

Berkeley Lab staff are invited to attend a daylong energy symposium entitled “Leadership at the Nexus of Science, Policy and Business” from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 7, in UC Berkeley’s MLK Student Union. The event will feature panels on bioenergy research, green building and development, carbon capture and sequestration, and the future of nuclear power in the U.S., among other topics. Berkeley Lab speakers include physical bioscientist Chris Somerville, earth scientist Curtis Oldenberg, nuclear scientist Per Peterson, and Ashok Gadgil and Steve Selkowitz, both with the Environmental Energy Technologies Division. Go here for more information and to register.

Exchange Old Lab IDs
At the Badge Office

Lab employees who do not possess the newer Lab IDs with the DOE logo must exchange their old ones by April 1. After April 1, old badges will not work. Employees with non-DOE logo badges should bring them to the Badge Office in the 65A trailer to obtain a new one. The Badge Office can use an employee's archived photograph for those who prefer it. Contact the Badge Office at x4551 with any questions.

Discount Tickets
For Disney Ice Show

Berkeley Lab staff can purchase tickets to Disney’s “Princess Wishes” show at Oakland’s Oracle Arena March 5-9, saving up to $13.75 off the regular single ticket price. Go here to purchase the tickets, using BERKLAB as the promotional code.
