Want a Water Study?
Dig Deep...for Funds

By Marc Benjamin

How much water is there below Fresno County's Sierra foothills? How much development can that water support? Scientists hope to find the answers by creating a three-dimensional computer map of the water trapped in rock fissures and underground pools. All they need is money. Since last year, scientists from Berkeley Lab have been in the Auberry area three or four times to evaluate potential project sites for the foothill water study, said Hu-Shu Wu, a Berkeley Lab staff scientist involved in the effort. Most recently, they were in the foothills this summer. Full story.

The East Bay Association for Women in Science presents a light dinner and talk by breast cancer researcher Mina Bissell, Ph.D., Distinguished Scientist in the Life Sciences Division, on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Novartis in Emeryville. Scientists and science enthusiasts, men and women, are welcome. Meetings are free and open to non-AWIS members. Go here for more information and directions.

Test Ground Circuit Interrupters Monthly

image spacer
Employees should test all Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) receptacles in their lab and office areas (and at home) monthly by pressing the test button. Perform this test immediately on any receptacle that has not been tested in the past month. If the GFCI is functioning properly, the reset button will pop out with a click, and power will be removed from the receptacle (check this by plugging in a small lamp). If this does not occur, do not use the receptacle and notify the Facilities Work Request Center. If a GFCI problem is detected at home, call a qualified electrician. Go here for more information.

Can Fuel Economy, Car Safety Co-Exist?
By Mark Alpert

Hummer spacer
For years, the automobile industry has argued that congressional attempts to make cars and trucks more fuel-efficient would compromise passenger safety. As Congress considers an energy bill that would set regulations to further boost fuel economy standards, transportation experts debate the impact on safety. Tom Wenzel, a transportation scientist at Berkeley Lab, says the safety impact would depend on whether the regulations alleviate the present mismatch between cars and light trucks. According to Wenzel, the lower standard for trucks has fostered a proliferation of behemoth SUVs and pickups that cause thousands of deaths every year when they plow into cars. Full story.
