Brazilians Visit Lab,
Talk Biofuels Research
A delegation of nearly 20 Brazilian scientists, government agency officials, and business leaders visited Berkeley Lab last Thursday to learn about the Lab’s biofuels research initiatives. The group met with several Lab scientists, including Steve Chu, Graham Fleming, Chris Somerville, and Terry Hazen, and toured facilities such as the Advanced Light Source and the Molecular Foundry. The group’s Berkeley Lab visit was part of a tour of U.S. energy research facilities that also included the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO.

Chu Speaks at Urban
Planning Conference

Big names within the urban planning and transportation technology sectors met last week in Oakland to begin a conversation about how they could create more sustainable cities and vehicles. The Meeting of the Minds Conference brought together public officials, scientists, academics, auto manufacturers, and non-profits to discuss fuels of the future, improving transit systems, breakthroughs in urban design, climate change, and cutting-edge vehicle technology. Speakers included Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu, who discussed the facility's efforts in advancing the use of feedstock grasses to produce biofuels that are more sustainable than corn, a crop often touted as a source for making ethanol. Sexual Harassment Course
Online for Supervisors
Employees who are required to re-take the AB1825 online sexual harassment prevention training course will receive an e-mail this week from UC Office of the President's Judy Boyette, Associate Vice President, Human Resources and Benefits. The e-mail will include a link to the online training course. Managers and supervisors who completed the online training in January, February, and March of 2006 will also receive the e-mail notification to take the course again. Faculty will receive an e-mail notification from their campus location. The deadline to complete the course is Dec. 31, 2007. Periodic reminders will be sent until the course is completed. Unlike the 2005 program, the online course is coordinated centrally by UCOP, with e-mail invitations sent from [email protected]. Mercury Thermometers
Should be Replaced
Mercury thermometers, commonly found throughout the Lab, pose a problem because they are fragile and can be easily broken. When a thermometer breaks, the mercury can scatter over a large area. This presents a potential health risk to personnel and requires time-consuming decontamination and costly waste disposal. When ordering new equipment, specify non-mercury thermometers and components. Replace mercury thermometers with non-mercury, liquid-in-glass thermometers, or other devices such as digital thermometers. The EH&S Industrial Hygiene Group provides general-purpose, liquid-in-glass thermometers at no cost. Go here for more information.
