Darfur Stove Project
Airs on Local Station

Publicity continues for Berkeley Lab scientists' effort to provide Darfur refugees with more efficient cook stoves, which mean both safety and economy for the struggling Africans. Thursday night's KGO-TV (ABC) news report included a 3 1/2-minute segment on the stoves project and featured lead inventor Ashok Gadgil of Environmental Energy Technologies and designer Ken Chow of Engineering. Deadlines, Resources
For '07 Fiscal Close

With the end of the fiscal year only a few weeks away, division finance and business management are working hard to meet fiscal close deadlines. Communications aimed at this group includes e-mails, details on the BLIS and IRIS portals, and voice recordings announcing the status of accounting activity and financial reports. Stay tuned for future articles in Today at Berkeley Lab for fiscal close updates. Go here to view a list of deadlines, and here for additional information on fiscal close.

Memorial for Daniel
Koshland Planned

Friends and colleagues of famed biochemist Daniel Koshland, who passed away on July 23, are invited to attend a memorial to be held on campus on Sunday, Sept. 16. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in Zellerbach Hall. A symposium on “The Science and Wit of Daniel Koshland, Jr.” will take place prior to the service, from noon to 3 p.m., same location. More information is available here.

State Climate Conference
Features Lab Scientists

Five Berkeley Lab scientists will speak at the fourth annual California Climate Change Conference, which takes place today through Thursday at the Sacramento Convention Center. The event is sponsored by the California Energy Commission and the California Environmental Protection Agency, and focuses on the science for managing climate change in California. Lab speakers include Bill Collins and Norm Miller of the Earth Sciences Division, and Marc Fischer, Alan Sanstad, and Jayant Sathaye of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD). Go here for more information, including an agenda and instructions on viewing the conference online.

Berkeley Rep Science
Series Starts Sept. 17

Rick Diamond, with Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division, will kick off a fall series of science lectures at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre (2025 Addison St.) on Monday, Sept. 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. As part of a “Reducing Our Carbon Footprint” theme, Diamond will discuss: A Low-Energy House in Berkeley, Kabul, and Washington D.C. The talk explores how a “typical” house in Berkeley can reduce carbon emissions; recent work with a non-profit organization on developing low-cost, seismically stable and energy efficient housing for Afghanistan; and ongoing efforts to reduce energy use in the U.S. House of Representatives. Go here to view a complete schedule of talks.
