New Human/Chimp
Divergence Theory

The story of human evolution that began when the earliest ancestors of humans and chimpanzees first separated has taken a new turn with a claim that the event may have occurred more recently than the fossil records maintain. Also, some of the earliest members of both lines may have interbred again and again before the two species finally separated, according to scientists analyzing the genes of modern chimps and humans. Edward Rubin, director of the Joint Genome Institute and Berkeley Lab's Genomics Division, was intrigued by the findings. Rubin, who has been interested in determining the genetic relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans, called the study "complicated, but plausible." Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Softball Season Nears;
Form or Join a Team

Staff who manage an existing Berkeley Lab softball team, or wish to form a new one should contact league commissioner Steve Blair. Cohen
Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu recently presented one of several talks on "Diverse Frontiers of Science" in a symposium sponsored by the American Institute of Physics in honor of AIP's 75th anniversary. On May 3 — 75 years to the day of the first AIP board meeting — he and other distinguished scientists, including Berkeley Lab materials scientist Marvin Cohen, gathered in Washington D.C., and addressed the past, present and future of physics research. Chu's talk, entitled "Optics and Biophysics," can be viewed in an archived webcast (using Internet Explorer, click on "Chu" link and sign in). Cohen's talk, also available online, was on "Condensed Matter."

EETD's Melis, Berkeley
Students Win Biz Award

Melis

An alternative energy company has won the $25,000 first prize at the eighth annual UC Berkeley Business Plan Competition. Aurora BioFuels presented a plan showing how to create bio-diesel fuel with yields 125 times higher than existing bio-diesel conversion technologies, and at half the cost. The winning team is comprised of UC Berkeley students Matt Caspari, Guido Radaelli, and Bert Vick, and Berkeley Lab Environmental Energy Technologies researcher and UC Berkeley professor Tasios Melis.
