Genetic Material of Male
Neanderthal Sequenced

Neanderthal skull
The first nuclear DNA sequences from a Neanderthal have been reported. The results should provide clues about when certain diseases, or traits such as hair or skin color, arose. They also have geneticists excited about the idea of sequencing a Neanderthal genome. Eddy Rubin, director of the Joint Genome Institute and Berkeley Lab's Genomics Division, along with Svante Pääbo, with the Max Planck Institute, began the Neanderthal Genome Project about two years ago. The team has probed 60 Neanderthal specimens from museums for hints that the DNA might have survived millennia of degradation. Full story.

PEOPLE

Director Receives Honor
From Duke University

Among those who received degrees at Duke University commencement last Sunday was Berkeley Lab's own Steve Chu, shown above receiving the hood reflective of an honorary Ph.D. from Duke Marshal Richard White. The exercises took place at Wallace Wade Stadium on the North Carolina campus. Duke President Richard H. Brodhead awarded four honorary degrees: to Nobel Prize winner Chu, founder and CEO of Self-Help Martin Eakes, broadcast journalist Nina Totenberg, and former director of the National Institutes of Health James Wyngaarden. SAFETY LESSONS LEARNED

Prevent Spills: Inspect Equipment Before Use

Recently, an improperly constructed cabinet shelf collapsed while an employee was rearranging bottles of flammable liquids. A bottle of toluene broke and splashed a researcher's legs. There were no injuries, but the incident underscores the need to inspect equipment before using it. Specifically, employees should always inspect equipment upon receipt to assure that it meets the requirements of its intended use. Thoroughly assess the safety of all newly acquired equipment under anticipated adverse conditions prior to use. Go here for more information on this incident. Go here for other lessons learned.
