Biggest 3-D Map
Of Cosmos Created

Schlegel
A team of astronomers led by Berkeley Lab physicist David Schlegel and Nikhil Padmanabhan (coming to the Lab from Princeton in September) has published the largest three- dimensional map of the universe ever constructed, a wedge-shaped slice of the cosmos that spans a tenth of the northern sky, encompasses 600,000 uniquely luminous red galaxies, and extends 5.6 billion light-years deep into space, equivalent to 40 percent of the way back in time to the Big Bang. The principal motive for creating large-scale 3-D maps is to understand how matter is distributed in the universe, says Padmanabhan. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Vehicle Mileage
Reports Due Friday

Fleet Operations requests that all vehicle custodians report their monthly mileage immediately. Custodians are asked to report their mileage even if they have gone to the pumps, since the computer system that usually provides this information is currently unavailable. Include the vehicle license number and the current mileage on the odometer. E-mail your report no later than Friday.

Nordman
EETD's Nordman Part
Of Server Metrics Team

Bruce Nordman, a researcher in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, is a supporting member of the committee that has been established to develop standard methods and metrics for comparing energy use of server-class computers. Nordman, of Berkeley Lab's Energy Analysis Department, will also be liaison to the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program for the committee, formed by the non-profit Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC). The first SPEC energy and performance benchmark is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2007. Full story.

Goldhabers Win
'Ippy' Book Award

"Sonnets From Aesop," a collection of poems by former Lab employee Judith Goldhaber, with illustrations by Lab physicist Gerson Goldhaber, has been honored with an IPPY (Independent Publisher Book Award) as one of the ten "Outstanding Books of the Year" published by an independent press in 2005. This year's IPPY winners will be honored in Washington D.C. on Friday. Go here to read a book review that ran in The View.
