spacer image New Report Points
To Future of Physics

Murayama
Siegrist
Ray Orbach, director of DOE's Office of Science, today announced a new DOE/National Science Foundation report titled "Discovering the Quantum Universe: The Role of Particle Colliders." In plain language and expressive graphics, the report outlines bright scenarios for the future of high-energy physics, starting next year with the launch of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and soon followed, if researchers get their wish, by the International Linear Collider. The report committee was co-chaired by Berkeley Lab's Physics Division Director James Siegrist, and scientist Hitoshi Murayama was among the authors. View the entire report here (PDF file).

DOE UPDATE

Comments Sought
On Fermi Contractor Bid

The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking comments on a draft Request for Proposals for the competitive selection of a management and operating contractor for Fermilab, a major DOE Office of Science single program research facility located on 6,800 acres approximately 45 miles west of Chicago. Fermilab is a high-energy physics lab with an annual budget of about $315 million.  The draft RFP includes provisions to facilitate competition, encourage superior science, and achieve excellent management performance. SAFETY NOTE

Lesson Learned: Wear
Proper Gear for Job

Recently, an employee wearing leather gloves cut his finger while removing metal shavings from a dust mop. The cut was severe enough to require sutures. This injury could have been prevented if the employee had followed Facilities Division machine shop safety procedures, which call for a push broom and use of Kevlar cut-resistant gloves for hand protection. For their own protection, employees must follow safety policies specific to their work.
