Newman with modeling software

Modeling Software Gets
Licensed to Companies

The Technology Transfer Department has recently signed software licenses with two European oil and gas exploration companies, ENI S.p.A. and Statoil ASA. The revenue from these licenses will contribute to the Lab's unrestricted research funds. The software package — developed by earth scientist Greg Newman — is used for 3D parallel modeling of underwater hydrocarbon deposits. Go here to read a View story on Newman and the Lab's technology transfer process.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

Physics: Thinking
Back and Forward

Berkeley Lab isn't the only scientific institution celebrating a 75th anniversary this year. The American Institute of Physics (AIP) first set up shop in 1931 in New York City. To acknowledge the occasion, AIP has put together a story on what physicists think about how much their science has evolved and how far it has expanded into new territory. One historian says that quantum mechanics and Einstein's general theory of relativity are the two most important events to have laid down the "new physics" of our age. Full story.

Purchasing Specialist
Gets Training Award

Anderson
Edward Anderson, with the Office of the Chief Financial Officer's Procurement Department, recently received the Bill Gotcher award, bestowed by the National Association of Purchasing Management (Northern California). The award recognizes "outstanding students who reflect excellence in professional purchasing education." Anderson used the Lab's tuition reimbursement plan to complete a purchasing program at Cal State Hayward. His success in the classroom prompted the award.

FACES AT THE LAB

Staffer Pounds Numbers
By Day, Drums at Night

hadenfeldt
Hadenfeldt
Like many employees at the Lab, Charles Hadenfeldt migrated up to the Hill after many years working on campus. He started here in February, preparing budgets and proposals for the Life and Environmental Sciences Directorate. Prior to his stints on campus and at the Lab, Hadenfeldt was a professional drummer. Though he spends more time behind a desk than on a stage these days, he still performs with his wife Barbara and their jazz quartet "BabsHad." They have a regular gig delighting diners at the Emerald Garden Restaurant in Alameda.
