Lee with GRETA machine

Detector Sheds Light
On Atoms With GRETA
By Cheryl Pon

The wavelength of a gamma ray not only contains the most energy of any other wave in the electromagnetic spectrum, it can also treat some types of cancer, kill bacteria and so much more. Berkeley Lab nuclear scientists are developing the country's premier gamma-ray instrument for nuclear science, the Gamma Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA). The research project, conceived and created by I-Yang Lee, will produce its first stage, named GRETINA, in approximately the year 2010. Full story.

POLICY UPDATE

Reasonable Accommodation
And Medical Separation

The University of California is proposing to update its policies on Reasonable Accommodation and Medical Separation. The revised policies include an interactive process when reasonable accommodation is being considered for an employee who is unable to perform essential functions of his or her position due to disability.  The proposed policies may be found here. These policies apply to non-represented employees only.  Represented employees should contact their union representative or consult their collective bargaining agreement.  To comment on this proposed change, contact Mary Bishop (Mail Stop 90R2121) by Saturday, June 3.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

Funding Innovation: Will
U.S. Continue to Lead?

This week's issue of Federal Computer Week devotes its cover story to "The Search for the Next Big Bright Idea," analyzing the roles that government and industry play in innovative research. Times have changed, it says, and national science laboratories play a key role in the basic research once funded by industry. DOE Office of Science principal deputy Jim Decker comments on how things have changed since the space race, and he and others analyze the climate for innovation in the U.S. today. Read it here.

Lab Directors Highlight
Nuclear Energy Merits

Directors of nine of the Department of Energy's national laboratories recently announced their support for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) and discussed the collaboration among the labs in carrying out the partnership. GNEP, part of President Bush's Advanced Energy Initiative, will support advanced technologies to recycle spent nuclear fuel and promote emissions-free nuclear energy in a more proliferation-resistant manner. Full story.
