Hearing on Landmarking
Bevatron is Tomorrow

The City of Berkeley Landmarks Preservation Commission will be holding a public meeting on Berkeley Lab's Bevatron building tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Ave. They will invite comments on the potential landmarking of the building, which has been requested by some Berkeley citizens. The Lab has designated the structure for demolition, and the Department of Energy has provided funding to begin the process. Read a letter sent by Advanced Light Source deputy Ben Feinberg to the Commission on the Lab's position on the issue here.

Spallation Source
Generates First Neutrons

Berkeley Lab's SNS front-end system
Oak Ridge National Lab's Spallation Neutron Source has passed its most significant performance test with the successful generation of its first neutrons. Research conducted at the SNS will lay the groundwork for the next generation of materials research, which could lead to a virtually limitless number of innovations, including lighter airplanes, improved batteries and fuel cells, and time-released drugs. Berkeley Lab was among the collaborators on the SNS project, creating the front-end system that generates the proton beam.

Bodman Tells Forum:
Act on Science Now

Bodman
Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman, in a recent talk before the American Association for the Advancement of Science Forum on Science and Technology, said a consensus is building among policymakers "that this nation must act, and act decisively, to improve mathematics and science education at all levels and expand its support for basic research and development work in the physical sciences." At the Office of Science, he said DOE is "focusing on targeted sectors that we believe have the greatest potential. Those sectors include supercomputers, nanotechnology, high-intensity light sources, and energy from biomass and nuclear fusion. We are also increasing our support for both high-energy and nuclear physics." Read the American Institute of Physics summary here, and the full text of the talk here.

Experts Say Hydrogen Fuel Not Ready for Prime Time
By Carl T. Hall

President Bush has pointed to hydrogen technology as the ultimate solution to the nation's fuel supply problems, but one big question waits to be answered: Where will all the hydrogen come from? Even if manufacturers can produce affordable hydrogen-powered vehicles that people will want to buy, energy experts say the nation's petroleum addiction — a key source of carbon emissions contributing to global warming — won't end until an environmentally sound hydrogen supply and distribution system is at hand.
