spacer image UC Clarifies Status
Of UCRP Fund Proposal

Since the University of California announcement in March that an updated funding policy for its retirement plan will result in some restoration of employee contributions beginning next year, misinterpretations and rumors have circulated about the impacts on employees. In a letter to UC Human Resources Officers Wednesday, HR Executive Director Randy Scott at the Office of the President clarified the status, including the statement that "the intent of the Regents is to begin contributions at a low level to minimize the impact on employee take-home pay." Go here to read the entire letter (PDF).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Next Blood Drive
Is Coming Up

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Berkeley Lab Monday, May 15, to Wednesday, May 17, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the cafeteria. Go here to make an appointment (click "registration" link, sponsor code is LBL). For questions, contact Clark Wood (x6489) or Heather Pinto (x4181). Note: Parking at the cafeteria will be slightly affected during the blood drive.

May is Stroke
Awareness Month

The Health Care Facilitator's Office reminds employees that May is "Stroke Awareness Month." Strokes are the third leading cause of death in America. Strokes occur when a blood clot blocks an artery, or a blood vessel breaks, interrupting blood flow to the brain. Brain cells then begin to die and damage occurs. Go here for information, including stroke symptoms.

DOE Genome Scientist
To Direct Cyber Project

Gilna
Paul Gilna has been recruited to direct a $24.5-million effort to develop an innovative cyber infrastructure that will allow scientists to organize and analyze a vast amount of data on the genomes and community ecologies of ocean-dwelling microbes. For the last five years, Gilna has been director of the JGI-Los Alamos. JGI is a $70 million-per-year collaboration that teams the expertise of five national laboratories, including Berkeley Lab. "While we're sorry to lose Paul's leadership of the JGI-Los Alamos, we expect greater benefit to the genomics community because of the new possibility of a JGI-Calit2 (California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology) collaboration through him," said Eddy Rubin, JGI director.
