Rosenfeld
Fermi Award
Now Among
Rosenfeld's
Laurels

Just a day before Art Rosenfeld was to be honored with a symposium on campus today in his honor, the former Berkeley Lab energy pioneer was selected by President Bush to receive the prestigious Enrico Fermi Award, the government's oldest award for scientific achievement. Joining a list of past notables that includes Ernest Lawrence, Hans Bethe and Robert Oppenheimer, Rosenfeld was chosen for his legacy of research and policy work in energy efficiency and use. Lab Director Steve Chu called Rosenfeld "our 'poster child' of a scientist who moved from a thriving career in basic research in order to address a problem of immediate national need." Read more about his contributions at Berkeley Lab here, and the Department of Energy's Fermi Award announcement here.

Berkeley Physics Major
Receives Larimer Award

Elor
The second annual Ruth-Mary Larimer scholarship — an award of $500 — was given to UC Berkeley physics major Gilly Elor. Elor, a transfer student from Diablo Valley Community College, was honored for her excellence in course work and research activities. She is also working on the KamLAND project at the Lab. Ruth-Mary Larimer was a long-time staff member of the Lab's Nuclear Science Division. Those wishing to make tax-deductible contributions to this scholarship can send donations to the Ruth-Mary Larimer Scholarship, c/o Claudia Trujillo, Physics Department, 366 Le Conte Hall, UC Berkeley. Avian Flu Information
On EH&S Web Site

As Avian influenza continues to spread among bird populations around the world, it poses a potential threat to humans. Lab Health Services Director Peter Lichty has put together a website for Lab employees that provides updates of the current situation world-wide, and that will post relevant information on employee travel and emergency planning. It also includes links to Avian flu sites posted by the Department of Health and Human Services, the World Health Organization, and the Occupational Health Disaster Expert Network.

Many Thanks to Lab's
Admin Professionals

April 24 through 28 marks Administrative Professionals Week, and the Lab would like to thank all administrative staff for the support they provide in pursuit of its scientific mission. Started in 1952 as "National Secretaries Day," the event was created to recognize the valuable contributions of office staff in business and government, and to encourage students to consider administrative careers. Go here for more information on Administrative Professionals Week.
