Facilities Announces
RIFs; Volunteers Sought

Berkeley Lab Facilities Division Director George Reyes has announced that financial constraints and a shift in future priorities for the Division have necessitated a Reduction in Force (RIF). All hiring activity (except vacancies in job classifications not affected by the RIF that are deemed critical by management), promotions and reclassifications have been temporarily frozen. Volunteer resignations will be considered in lieu of layoffs of others, with applications due by noon on Wednesday, April 12. Volunteers may be eligible to receive severance pay. Go here to read Reyes' announcement memo to the Division.

Summer Science Camp
Canceled This Year

Berkeley Lab employees who have brought their children to summer science camp in the past should be aware that the camp will not be offered in 2006. With the program coordinators gone this year and resources limited, it was decided to cancel the youth science camp. Alternatives include camps at the Lawrence Hall of Science, Chabot Space and Science Center, and the Sally Ride Science for Girls camp, along with other summer camps, at UC Berkeley.

POLICY UPDATE

Proposed Amendment
To Lab Vacation Policy

The Laboratory proposes to amend the vacation policy to allow payment of accrued vacation credit to employees who change from a vacation accruing appointment to one that does not.  The text of the proposed policy may be found here. This change affects non-represented employees only.  Represented employees should review their union agreements or contact their union representatives for information regarding their situation. Those wishing to comment on this change can send an e-mail or letter to Mary Bishop (MS 939R0200) by Saturday, April 29.
