SPECIAL EVENTS

Lab Celebrates 75th
At Campus Open House

Berkeley Lab will have a very special presence at Cal Day on April 22, UC Berkeley's annual daylong open house. In honor of the Laboratory's 75th anniversary this year, an exhibition of photos and artifacts will be on display at the exact location of Ernest Lawrence's original "Rad Lab" - on the patio between Latimer and Pimentel Halls. In addition, bus tours to the Advanced Light Source will be offered, and Lab Director Steve Chu will present a lecture in Pimentel at 11 a.m. Go here for Cal Day information; a full schedule will be posted after April 1.

IN MEMORIAM

Longtime Lab Guest
Passes Away at 95

Fred Stross, a longtime guest with the Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, passed away at age 95 on March 15. Stross, a chemist by training, worked with Frank Asaro, also in EETD, for more than 30 years, using chemical analysis methods to determine where archaeological artifacts were made. Their most famous work involved two Egyptian quartzite statues from the Colossi of Memnon, which was the subject of a cover article in Science Magazine. Among his many accomplishments, Stross was a past president of the San Francisco Archaeological Institute of America and co-author of over 100 publications.
CRITTER UPDATE

Nanocat Continues
To Grow, Thrive

Diva, nee Nanocat
Remember Nanocat, the tiny kitten that was rescued by Environmental Health and Safety workers near the Molecular Foundry construction site in 2004? She was adopted by Lab employee Kristi Shaw (Office of the Chief Financial Officer) and is now called "Diva." And as this glamorous photo shows, she is living up to her new name. Shaw says Diva is happy and healthy and is just starting to explore the outdoors. Sounds like the purr-fect life.

Lab's Naulleau Joins
New York Nano Project
By Eric Anderson

Naulleau

The University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering on Monday received nearly $2 million to fund development of three- dimensional integrated circuits and to recruit a top researcher from the West Coast — Berkeley Lab materials scientist Patrick Naulleau. He will focus on extreme-ultraviolet lithography, using light of extremely short wavelengths to etch ever-smaller components and circuits on a wafer. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Weight, Nutrition Topics
Of Noon Talk Today

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator Office is hosting a brown-bag talk on weight management and nutrition tomorrow at noon in Perseverance Hall (in the cafeteria). The speaker is registered nurse Lynn Fraley, an expert in the fields of stress management, guilt-free approaches to healthy living, and the healing power of touch.

Inventory Deadline
Is March 31

The 2006 Property Inventory Campaign deadline is March 31. At that time Division property representatives will be hanging up their scanners to cool. Since any assets that cannot be found reduce the success rate for the whole Lab, these final search and scan days are critical. Progress charts posted here show that the Contract 31-mandated find rates for number and value of assets have been been met by some divisions. The Lab is very close to meeting the total requirement, and a final push from all involved will help meet the final goal. Employees with questions about the inventory or any other property-related activities should contact their division property representative or coordinator.
