30-Day Comment Period
Begins for Bevatron EA

A draft Environmental Assessment (EA) has been issued for the demolition of the Bevatron and Building 51, and the Department of Energy has invited the public to comment on it until April 21. The EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Complete demolition may take between 4 and 7 years, beginning mid-2006, contingent upon funding and results of material sampling. Written comments on the EA can be sent to Carl Schwab in the DOE Berkeley Site Office, MS90R1023. The EA can be reviewed at the Berkeley Public Library or on the web here.

Contest Awards Top
'Green' Innovations

The California Clean Tech Open is a competition that will bring entrepreneurs to San Francisco in September to vie for the nation's largest cash and service prize devoted to innovations with a positive environmental impact. Initiated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Club of Northern California Clean Technology Program, the contest will help turn ideas into real businesses, boosting the clean tech economy in California. Berkeley Lab is among the competition's partners. Go here for more information.

Dark Energy Center
Opens in South Bay
By Keay Davidson

Missing-persons bureaus locate missing people. Now Menlo Park has a home for investigators who seek a much bigger target — the missing parts of the universe. On Friday, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Menlo Park officially opened a three-story headquarters for its researchers who are looking for the missing mass. Scientists estimate that 96 percent of the cosmos consists of dark energy and dark matter. In the 1990s, researchers at Berkeley Lab began investigating a bizarre phenomenon: The expanding universe seems to be expanding faster and faster with time, rather than slowing down as expected. Full story.

Can Energy Research
Learn a New Dance?
By Eli Kintisch

Turning basic research into commercial technology has never been easy. But it's especially hard in the energy sector, where problems such as cutting greenhouse gas emissions and finding less-polluting energy sources resist easy solutions. Last week, Congress addressed this problem by embracing the concept of creating a small, nimble agency within the mammoth Department of Energy (DOE). "A small, agile, DARPA-like organization could improve DOE's pursuit of R&D much as DARPA did for the Department of Defense," wrote the academies panel in a report described at the House hearing by Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu.
