New Banners Herald
Lab’s Diamond Year
Employees and guests entering Berkeley Lab through the main Blackberry gate will notice a new set of “welcome” banners commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Lab along Cyclotron Road. They are the first of several facility augmentations — to be unveiled over the next several weeks — that celebrate the anniversary. The banners were created by the Communications and Creative Services offices in Public Affairs.

NERSC’s Experience Cited
In Interconnect Speed Story
Joab Jackson, a writer for Government Computer News, often calls the Lab's Computing Sciences Division when looking for an expert to quote. When writing a recent article about the role of fast interconnects in overall supercomputer performance, Jackson contacted NERSC General Manager Bill Kramer of Berkeley Lab. “For this supercomputing center,” Jackson wrote, “the speed of the conduit between processors was as important as the speed of the CPUs themselves.” Full story.

U. of Washington Finding
May Boost Malaria Fight
Scientists at the University of Washington have identified a critical step in how the malaria parasite invades cells, a finding that may be of high interest to those looking to develop desperately needed new anti-malarial treatments. "If you can block this, it gets at the heart of the malaria parasite," said Dr. Wim Hol, a UW biochemist and Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellow who leads a multi-institutional consortium dedicated to identifying key proteins in parasites as potential drug targets. Berkeley Lab’s Jay Keasling heads the Berkeley Lab team, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Full story.
