Lab Scientists Work
On Thin Solar Panel
By Rick DelVecchio
Long before President Bush told Americans they were addicted to oil, Ilan Gur, a UC Berkeley graduate student and researcher in Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division, was down in his basement chemistry lab working toward a cure. With the help of Paul Alivisatos, Berkeley Lab’s Associate Laboratory Director for Physical Sciences, Gur is playing a part in creating a new kind of solar panel, one so light it could roll off a printing press like newsprint, and so cheap that the world's poorest local economies could not only afford to buy it but also make it. HCRA, DepCare
Deadlines Loom
Two important dates are approaching for Health Care Reimbursement Accounts (HCRA) and Dependent Care Reimbursement Accounts (DepCare). Tomorrow is the last day for expenses to be incurred for the HCRA/DepCare 2005 plan year, which runs from Jan. 1, 2005 through tomorrow. SHPS (the university's provider for these programs) must receive all claims for services by June 15. IRS rules state that both HCRA and DepCare are “use it or lose it” spending accounts. Account holders will forfeit any balance in their account after the closing date for the plan year. For more information, go to www.shps.com or call SHPS at 1-877-270-3915.
