UC Considers Employee
Contributions to UCRP
The University of California Regents will be meeting this week to consider action authorizing the reinstatement of employee contributions to the UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) for the first time since the early 1990s. Although the Regents will not address a specific strategy at the Thursday session in Los Angeles, it is expected that they will discuss the need to gradually implement staff contributions beginning in July 2007, due to financial strains on the UC pension fund. Go here to read a letter to employees from UC Associate Vice President Judith Boyette. Today at Berkeley Lab will provide more details as they become available. Vehicle Mileage
Reports Due
Fleet Operations requests that all vehicle custodians report their monthly mileage immediately. Custodians are asked to report their mileage even if they have gone to the pumps, since the computer system that usually provides this information is currently unavailable. Include the vehicle license number and the current mileage on the odometer. E-mail reports to [email protected].

Nanotech Leadership

An Emeryville company called Nano-Tex has figured out how to coat fabrics with an ultrathin chemical shield that repels spills and stains. At Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, construction crews are putting the finishing touches on a six-story research center that has been carved into the East Bay hills. The $85 million structure, called the Molecular Foundry, will soon house as many as 200 academic, industrial and government scientists who want to develop new ways to make tiny products. The company and the laboratory represent two dimensions — one practical, the other theoretical — of the emerging field of nanotechnology. Full story.

Jeff Bokor, Deputy Director for Science for the Molecular Foundry and a professor in UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, is one of nearly 30 researchers teaming up to launch what will be one of the world's largest joint research programs focusing on the pioneering technology called "spintronics." The Western Institute of Nanoelectronics, founded by UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and Stanford University is designed to explore and develop advanced research devices, circuits and nanosystems with performance beyond conventional devices. The institute’s administrative headquarters will be located at UCLA, with scientific and technical responsibilities for the program distributed across all four campuses. Full story.
