spacer image Director Announces Two
Changes in Operations

Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu has announced that Sandy Merola, currently Division Director for Information Technologies (IT), will be the Laboratory's new Deputy Chief Operations Officer under COO David McGraw. In addition, the IT and Finance Divisions will become a formal part of Operations (Ops). Both changes were made to align Operations more fully in support of Berkeley Lab science, "so that we can quickly undertake our bold new science initiatives," Chu said in his announcement. "To produce the required level of Ops support, while driving down overhead costs, we realized we needed a more sophisticated organizational structure and expanded capacity in our executive leadership." Dennis Hall Passes Away

Dennis Hall, who joined the Lab as a computer programmer in 1959 and retired in 2000, died at his home Tuesday after a long illness. Hall returned to the Lab to work on cyber security projects until last year. In 1996, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the USENIX association for his work to improve computer operating systems. "Dennis not only provided invaluable expertise on technology and policy matters, he was also a gentleman and true professional," said IT Division Director Sandy Merola. "He dedicated his career to the Lab and we've truly missed Dennis every day since illness forced his departure." Go here to read more about Hall's career. Memorial services are pending.

Smooth Sailing For Telecommunications Employee

Meet Cindy Wood, who works for the IT Division's Infrastructure Department. She spearheads new projects related to telephone systems here at the Lab. She recently helped roll out the Enhanced 911 service, which gives emergency personnel the exact location of callers. When not at the Lab, Wood loves "sailing, sailing and more sailing. My family (husband Steve and 14-year-old son Kyle) has a small boat, which we take out on the Bay as much as possible. We also use all of our vacation time sailing and scuba diving in the Caribbean, where we plan to retire when the time comes."
