spacer image Working Together
To Cut Energy Costs

Berkeley Lab has implemented various conservation measures in the use of natural gas, electricity, gasoline and diesel fuel in response to a federal mandate to reduce energy. In order to meet the requested reduction goal of 2 percent per year over the next 10 years, all employees are asked to adopt practices consistent with the federal directive. Go here to see the ways energy, especially power usage, can be reduced in day-to-day behavior.

State-Based
Approaches
To Solar PV
In New Homes

States are using a variety of innovative approaches to support the market for solar energy in new homes, according to a report released recently by Berkeley Lab and the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA). The report describes the specific approaches that state clean energy funds and several other organizations have pursued to drive the adoption of solar photovoltaics (PV) in new homes. The report was authored by Ryan Wiser, Mark Bolinger and Galen Barbose, with the Lab's Environmental Energy Technolgoies Division. Full story.

Lab Inventors Get
Their Royalty Checks

Deputy Director Graham Fleming and Technology Transfer Department staff awarded royalty checks to Berkeley Lab inventors on Monday. Distributions were up 27 percent this year, yielding over $799,000 for 105 scientists whose inventions were licensed by industry. Average distribution was $7,605, while the largest was more than $92,000. Over $1.6 million in additional licensing income will go to the Lab, primarily for research and development. Nobelist Chamberlain Lost Parkinson's Disease Fight

By James Glanz

Chamberlain
Owen Chamberlain, who shared a Nobel Prize for discovering the antiproton (and was one of Berkeley Lab's 10 Nobel Laureates), opening a glimpse into the strange world of antimatter, whose mysteries tantalize scientists to this day, died Tuesday at his home in Berkeley. He was 85. The cause was complications of Parkinson's disease, said his wife, Senta Pugh Chamberlain. Dr. Chamberlain, an emeritus professor of physics at the UC Berkeley campus and Lab researcher for nearly four decades, had been determined enough to attend a departmental physics colloquium as recently as Monday, Mrs. Chamberlain said.
