Supercomputer Study
Of Water's Structure

Prendergast
Familiar as it is, there's a lot we don't know about water — such as the structure taken up by liquid water molecules. With a grant of time on Argonne Lab's IBM Blue Gene supercomputer, a research team, including Berkeley Lab chemical scientist David Prendergast, hopes to plunge into the problem and come up with some answers. Until recently, water molecules were thought to cluster in tetrahedral groups of four. But in 2004, researchers at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center claimed to have found structures of rings and chains instead. Another team at Berkeley Lab conducted similar experiments and reaffirmed the old tetrahedral model. Full story.

Colorectal Cancer
Awareness in March

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator office wants to remind employees that March is "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month." Colorectal cancer develops from growths on the lining of the colon and rectum, called polyps. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Screening tests, such as a colonoscopy, can detect polyps so that they can be removed before they become cancerous. Those interested in receiving a brochure on preventing colorectal cancer can call x6997 or send e-mail here.

Book Series

Berkeley Lab earth scientist Inez Fung is one of several "trailblazing women" featured in a series of books geared towards middle-school students. Sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, the "Women's Adventures in Science" books focus on the life and work of women scientists, with insights into the personal and professional paths that led to their careers. Go here to learn more about Fung's book and the series.

Is the Peer Review
Process Broken?
By Alison McCook

Submissions are up, reviewers are overtaxed, and authors are lodging complaint after complaint about the peer review process at top-tier journals. The recent discrediting of stem cell work by Woo-Suk Hwang at Seoul National University sparked media debates about the system's failure to detect fraud. Authors, meanwhile, complain that reviewers sabotage papers that compete with their own, strong papers are sent to sister journals to boost their profiles, and editors at commercial journals are too young and invariably make mistakes about which papers to reject or accept. Still, even senior scientists are reluctant to give specific examples, worrying that the move could jeopardize their future publications. Full story.
