Gene Therapy Helps
Solve Delivery Problems
By Tom Abate

Schaffer
Survival of the fittest drove evolution. Now Berkeley Lab physical bioscientist David Schaffer is subjecting viruses to brutal competition as a tool of biomedical innovation. Using a laboratory version of natural selection, he is searching for a better way to deliver microscopic healing agents directly to the diseased cells of patients. In the process, Schaffer is trying to solve one of the problems that has held back the field of gene therapy, one of the darlings of biotechnology before stem cells stole the limelight. Full story.

Nanoscale
Tubing That
Instantly
Assembles
Itself

Making tubes useful often means joining them to other tubes and linking them together in networks. Easy enough to do with standard water pipes — but on the nanoscale, it's quite difficult to accomplish. Now a team of researchers, including Berkeley Lab materials scientist Erdmann Spiecker, have found a completely new way to form complex networks of nanotubes. Full story.

Sizzling Salsa
Lessons at Lab

Berkeley Lab's Dance Club is back in business. After a long hiatus, the group has found a new space for lessons, which will begin on Monday with salsa for beginners and intermediate dancers. Instruction starts at noon and continues to 1 p.m. in the Building 51 lobby (Bevatron). The four-week salsa session is free of charge. Organizers say new moves not previously taught will be demonstrated. For more information, contact Joy Kono (x6375).

Morning's Power Outage From Failed Transformer

This morning's site-wide power outage, which also affected the UC Berkeley campus, was caused by the failure of a Pacific Gas and Electric transformer, possibly the result of inclement weather. Electricity at the Lab went out shortly before 8 a.m. and was restored beginning around 8:35 a.m. Call the Work Request Center for any lingering power problems.
