Tracking California's
Power Demand

How much electrical power are Californians using today? How much spare capacity is available, and how close are we to rolling blackouts? So many people are visiting the California Independent System Operator's website that it's difficult to get access. For a good alternative, view a web page developed by Environmental Energy Technologies Division's Alan Meier. He initially developed the site during the electricity crisis of 2001. And for hints on how to reduce your power usage, check out the state's Flex Your Power site.

No Charge for E-Mail
For Month of July

Berkeley Lab's IT Division has announced that it will not charge for e-mail storage for the month of July due to budget adjustments resulting from improved efficiencies. The Division's e-mail group continues to work on a new funding model. Updates will be published in future editions of Today at Berkeley Lab. For questions, contact the IT Help Desk (x4357).

IT Engineer's Recipe
Wins County Fair Ribbon

Christman
John Christman, a network engineer for the Lab's IT Division, took home a blue ribbon for his Whiskey Peppercorn Steak recipe at the Alameda County Fair earlier this month. "I almost didn't make it," says Christman of the time constraints put on contestants. "I had two minutes to go, and my sauce wouldn't clarify. I kept stirring and praying, then stirring some more ... man, it was close." Go here to view his winning recipe.

Symbiotic Tree Fungus
Genome Sequenced

Laccaria
The DNA sequence of Laccaria bicolor, a fungus that forms a beneficial symbiosis with trees and inhabits one of the most ecologically and commercially important microbial niches in North American and Eurasian forests, has been determined by the Joint Genome Institute along with U.S. and international partners. The sequence will provide the global research community with a critical resource to develop faster growing trees for producing more biomass that can be converted to fuels, and for trees capable of capturing more carbon from the atmosphere, said JGI and Berkeley Lab Genomics Division Director Eddy Rubin. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Electrical Switching
Conducted Tomorrow

The Facilities Division will perform 12kV switching tomorrow at approximately 11 a.m. to test the Lab's 2MW generator. A public address announcement will be made prior to the test. The procedure should be transparent and it is highly unlikely that an interruption will occur, but the possibility always exists. Staff should take all necessary precautions to protect data and equipment. For questions or additional information contact Jim Murphy (x4175).
