Power Conservation
Critical at Lab Today

California ISO (Independent System Operator) has extended its Power Watch for electrical power through today. Monday's peak demand is anticipated to reach a record 52,000 MegaWatts (MW) by 4 p.m., which may trigger a Stage III alert and rotating power outages throughout the state. The Facilities Division is prepared to activiate emergency electrical procedures at the Lab, including the deployment of the 2 MW emergency power supply that would reduce the Lab's load on the state's electrical grid. All Laboratory personnel are strongly encouraged to exercise energy conservation measures throughout the day, such as:

Turning off unnecessary lighting, office equipment and other electrical devices.
Minimizing the use of coffee pots, microwave ovens and other convenience appliances.
Powering down computers when not in active use.
Using stairwells instead of elevators wherever possible.
Keeping window blinds/shades closed.

These simple steps will contribute to easing today's energy crisis in California and will help the Lab avoid emergency measures that could impact us all.

Brain Exercise May
Reverse Pre-Dementia

Scientists this week announced new findings that indicate it may be possible to arrest or even reverse memory decline in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a pre-dementia condition that commonly leads to Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at UCSF and UC Davis presented study results at the 10th International Conference on Alzheimer's disease in Madrid. The study shows that a novel series of computer-based exercises may improve memory in MCI patients. "The results of these human experiments provide some indication that cognitive function might be improved with appropriate stimulation," said William Jagust, a neuroscientist at Berkeley Lab and a co-author of the study. Piedmont Ave. Work
To Disrupt Traffic

Those who access the Lab from the south side of town should be aware that the City of Berkeley is planning a reconstruction project for Piedmont Ave. from Dwight Way to Bancroft Way. Work is scheduled to begin today and completed by Aug 18. One side of the street will be closed off entirely during the project, re-routing vehicle traffic to detours on nearby streets. Summer Lecture Wednesday





Sessler

Andy Sessler, Berkeley Lab director from 1973 to 1980, will shed light on the Lab's nearly eight-decade history of inventing and refining particle accelerators, which continue to illuminate the nature of the universe. The talk — part of the Lab's special 75th anniversary summer lecture series — takes place at noon Wednesday in the Building 50 Auditorium. The theoretical physicist, who also founded the Energy and Environment Division, the predecessor to both the Earth Sciences and Environmental Energy Technologies Divisions, will chronicle the evolution of accelerators from Ernest O. Lawrence's 1929 cyclotron to today's powerful machines.

Sequencing Orientation
Talk is Tomorrow

Gerald Tuskan, a member of the Plant Molecular Ecology Group at Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee, will give a talk on "Laboratory Sequencing Program Orientation" tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Berkeley West Biocenter (717 Potter St.). It will also be screened by videoconference in Building 84-318 as well as Bldg. 100-149C at the Joint Genome Institute. Tuskan specializes in the genetics and biotechnology of forest tree species.

NAE's 'Young Engineers'





Lunden

Melissa Lunden, with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, is among 81 of the nation's brightest young researchers selected to take part in the National Academy of Engineering's annual "Frontiers of Engineering" symposium. The event brings together engineers ages 30 to 45 who are performing cutting-edge engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines. The participants — from industry, academia, and government — were nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and chosen from nearly 200 applicants. Full story.

A new virus is circulating on the Internet via poisoned PowerPoint (.ppt) files. This new vulnerability currently has no security patch. The best defense is to not open any unexpected .ppt files. Those receiving a suspicious-looking .ppt file should send it unopened to the Computer Protection Program. Go here for more information.
