RESEARCH UPDATE

NERSC Simulates
Gulf Coast Hurricanes

shoe
DOE recently announced that the Office of Science has provided an additional 400,000 supercomputing processor-hours to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to simulate Gulf Coast hurricanes. The allocation brings the amount of computational time provided by DOE on supercomputers at its National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) to 800,000 processor-hours. “I’m proud that our computing resources at NERSC can be used to create simulations that will help save lives, reduce property loss and protect the environment when hurricanes strike the Gulf Coast,” Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman said. Full story.

SAFETY UPDATE

Blackberry gate

More Safety Measures
Installed at Blackberry Gate

Due to a few minor vehicle accidents at Blackberry Gate, which is undergoing renovations, the following additional changes will be in effect throughout the construction project to ensure everyone’s safety. Flag people will be posted on the uphill and downhill sides of the kiosk. There will also be a stop sign posted on the downhill side (as motorists and bicyclists exit the lab) to control traffic until the project is completed. All motorists and bicyclists are asked to proceed with caution and heed the various traffic controls, such as signs and flag people, that are now in place.

Lab physicist Kevin Lesko is featured in an article in South Dakota’s Black Hills Pioneer. The article states that “among the people who may become our neighbors and even friends as the Homestake Mine's future unfolds is a man who is quietly but steadfastly dedicating his life to the pursuit of knowledge. Kevin Lesko, of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California at Berkeley, heads up the collaboration of more than 200 scientists who believe the deep underground reaches of the Homestake site hold the most promise for development of scientific inquiry that will advance humankind's shared base of knowledge.” Full story.
