Roadmap for Cleaner
Fuels is Published
The U.S. Department of Energy Friday released an ambitious new research agenda for the development of cellulosic ethanol as an alternative to gasoline. The scientific "roadmap" cites recent advances in biotechnology that have made cost-effective production of ethanol from cellulose, or inedible plant fiber, an attainable goal. The report outlines a detailed research plan for developing new technologies to transform cellulosic ethanol a renewable, cleaner-burning, and carbon-neutral alternative to gasoline into an economically viable transportation fuel. Much of the genome sequencing required for the plan will take place at the Joint Genome Institute. Full story.

Proper Cigarette Butt Disposal Prevents Fires
Cigarettes are the leading cause of fire-related deaths in the U.S. and a significant source of litter. There have been several cigarette- related fires at Berkeley Lab over the past few years. To create and maintain an environment as close to smoke-free as possible and to protect the buildings and the natural surroundings at the Lab, smokers should light up in designated safe areas only (away from building windows and entrances and combustibles), and put butts in provided ash receptacles, and remind other smokers to do the same. To learn more, stop by the cafeteria on Wednesday between 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. to speak with representatives from "Keep America Beautiful" and the Lab's Fire Department. Pocket ashtrays can be purchased for $1.
When Fire Alarm
Sounds, Evacuate
Employees are reminded that when a building's fire alarm sounds, they should evacuate immediately. Keep vital items, such as glasses or keys, close by so evacuation is not delayed. Close doors upon departure and use stairs, not elevators. Those unable to negotiate stairs should stay on the stair landing with the door closed. Fire fighters will be responding within minutes.
