Climate Action Promotes
State's Economic Growth

Farrell
A team of two dozen prominent experts led by UC Berkeley professors — including Alex Farrell, a guest in Berkeley Lab's Earth Sciences Division — released a report Monday on the economic implications of meeting global warming emissions reduction targets established by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. The governor's goals include reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 2000 levels by the year 2010, and to 1990 levels by 2020. "Managing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in California," the first report in a series of economic and technology assessments, finds that just eight policy strategies can take California halfway to the governor's 2020 targets, while increasing the Gross State Product by approximately $60 billion and creating more than 20,000 new jobs. Full story.

Lawrence Award
Deadline Extended

The Department of Energy has extended the acceptance of nominations for the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Awards to May 1. The award honors scientists and engineers at mid-career for exceptional contributions in research and development supporting DOE and its mission. Candidates must have received their Ph.D.s on or after 1985. It was established in 1959 in recognition of Berkeley Lab's founder, who died in 1958. Go here to view a nomination brochure and here to learn more about the award.

Rob Johnson Will Head
Homeland Security Office

Johnson
Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu has announced that he has selected Rob Johnson, long-time senior program manager at the Lab, to head the Homeland Security Office. Johnson succeeds Bill Barletta, who has left Berkeley Lab to head the U.S. Particle Accelerator School at Fermilab. In his role, Johnson will oversee the laboratory's programs in homeland security, non-proliferation, counter-terrorism, and intelligence. Among his many prior responsibilities has been to connect the capabilities of Lab researchers to national scientific initiatives and to catalyze connections between the Lab and sponsoring agencies in Washington, D.C. Read Director Chu's announcement here.

Follow the Rules
When Stack Parking

spacer image
Because parking on the Hill is limited, Lab policy encourages the use of stack parking for commuter vehicles in designated areas. However, those who park in these areas must follow a couple of important rules: park as close as possible to the stop line, barrier or vehicle in front of you, and display a stack parking card in the front windshield. The card must include name, permit number, location, and Lab telephone number. Stack parking cards are available from the Site Access Office (x4551). Go here to view the complete set of guidelines for stack parking.

Lab's Ethanol Tank
Is Back in Operation

The Lab's ethanol fueling station, located at Building 76, is back in operation after being out of commission for several weeks. All Flex-Fuel vehicle cards have been programmed to work specifically with the E85 pump. For fleet questions, contact Leslie Striplin (x5475).
