Drug's Role in Mutation
Offers Leukemia Clues

Image of John Kuriyan spacer image
Kuriyan
Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers, including Physical Biosciences' John Kuriyan of Berkeley Lab, have discovered how a new generation of drugs thwarts a deadly mutation that causes chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The drug Gleevec, which is manufactured by Novartis, is considered the standard of treatment for CML. But certain patients develop resistance to the drug, usually caused by mutations that alter the shape of an enzyme, and the drug does not bind as effectively to its target. Using x-ray crystallography at the Advanced Light Source, the scientists produced detailed molecular images that reveal how VX-680, a drug developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Merck, interacts with a mutant form of the enzyme and stops proliferation of cancerous cells. Full story.

Earth Sciences Hosts
TOUGHREACT Training

TOUGHREACT image spacer image
The Lab's Earth Sciences Division hosted a TOUGHREACT training course last week. More than 20 scientists from seven countries with interest in quantitative numerical simulation of chemically reactive flows in subsurface geologic media participated. The TOUGHREACT code was developed at Berkeley Lab and is widely used for studies in nuclear waste geological disposal, groundwater contamination problems, CO2 geological sequestration, and geothermal energy development. It is among the most frequently requested codes in the library of the Department of Energy's Energy Science and Technology Software Center.

Wanted: Memorabilia
For Anniversary Exhibit

One of the ways to celebrate the many achievements recorded over the past 75 years at Berkeley Lab is to exhibit historic records of those achievements. As part of this year's anniversary program, the Lab would like to display memorabilia and artifacts representative of the Lab's distinguished scientific legacy in the Building 50 Lobby museum. Those who have possible items to loan should contact Ron Kolb in Communications and let him know what is available. The redesigned lobby exhibit will debut this spring.

Disaster Volunteers
Needed at Health Clinic

Berkeley Lab's Health Services needs to identify persons willing to help in the Building 26 clinic following a disaster. Depending on your training, you may be asked to help with communications, move patients or perform first aid. If you are willing to help, contact Wendy Corr, and include any medical skills, training and experience you have.
