Images Could Shed
Light on Dark Energy

Messier 100
Wang
Stunning new images of the galaxy Messier 100 taken by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope include a newly discovered Type Ia supernova, SN 2006x. Berkeley Lab's Lifan Wang is one of the astrophysicists measuring the supernova, which could yield valuable information for the study of dark energy. Go here for more about SN 2006x and photos of its home galaxy.

Learn About Lab's Photo, Design, Print Services

spacer image
The Creative Services Office (CSO, formerly TEID) — the Lab's home for high-quality illustration and design, photography, printing, technical writing and editing — will be showing its wares in a Mardi Gras-themed "Road Show" display on Tuesday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the cafeteria lobby. Staff will be on hand to discuss the job process — from cost estimate to completion — along with samples of their work, including high-resolution posters printed on their new Epson 9800 printer.

Marino
Nuclear Science Doctoral
Student Honored

Alysia Marino, who worked in the Nuclear Science Division while earning her Ph.D., has received this year's Mitsuyoshi Tanaka Dissertation Award in Experimental Particle Physics from the American Physical Society. Marino's doctoral thesis, "Evidence for Neutrino Oscillations in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory," reported neutrino measurements substantially enhanced by the addition of table salt to SNO's heavy water. Kevin Lesko supervised Marino's work and Physics Division's Marjorie Shapiro served as her faculty mentor. Marino is now at Fermilab. For more information on SNO, click here.

DOE Introduces
New Search Tool

Department of Energy researchers can now access approximately four million bibliographic records and over 140,000 full-text documents spanning more than six decades of DOE research through the Science Research Connection (SRC). SRC was developed by the DOE's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) exclusively for the DOE community and is intended for scientists and information specialists as a way to enhance research on behalf of DOE. SRC requires registration, and access is free of charge.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Some Downtown Staff Moving Back to the Hill

In a move that Berkeley Lab management hopes will be the first of several to consolidate all off-site staff back on the Hill, Human Resources personnel currently in Building 939 — the "Power Bar" Building downtown — will move to Building 90 by the end of April. The schedule calls for about 25 staff, including core HR personnel and a life sciences/biosciences center, to move to Building 90's second floor. Another 10 people from the Travel Office and the IT Division will shift from Building 939 to Building 937, thus concluding the Lab's lease at 939. Earth Sciences and Environmental Energy Technologies divisions reorganized space in Building 90 to accommodate the new arrivals.
