Rubin
JGI Director Outlines
Biofuels Research

Eddy Rubin, director of the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) and Berkeley Lab's Genomics Division, spoke last Friday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting in St. Louis. At a panel discussion entitled "Biosphere Monitoring and Ecosystem Forecasts: Sensing the Pulse of the Planet," Rubin outlined how the JGI is directing the technology of DNA sequencing to scan the environment for processes that will lead to cheaper and easier-to-produce biofuels. A story about Rubin's research also appeared in Nature.

Explaining Ice
Can Be Slippery

spacer image

Here is one question that probably won't cross the minds of Sasha Cohen, Irina Slutskaya and other Olympic women figure skaters: Why is ice slippery? Though the question may seem a simple one, physicists are still searching for an answer. In 1996, Berkeley Lab researcher Gabor Somorjai bombarded the surface of ice with electrons and watched how they bounced off, producing a pattern that looked at least partially liquid at temperatures down to minus 235 degrees. A couple of years later, a team of German scientists corroborated Somojai's findings. "The water layer is absolutely intrinsic to ice," Somorjai said. Full story.

Students from Drake High School listen to CSEE head Rollie Otto

Marin Science Students
Tour EETD Programs

For the eighth year in a row, students from Sir Francis Drake High School's SEA-DISC program (Studies of the Environment Academy Drake Integrated Studies Curriculum) came to the Lab last Thursday for their annual visit to the Environmental Energy Technologies Division. They took a lesson on how to use Home Energy Saver with Rollie Otto, head of the Center for Science and Engineering Education, visited the Advanced Windows Test Facility and the Infrared Thermography Lab, and had a look at some new energy efficient technologies: cool color roofing materials and a new high efficiency LED desk lamp which was developed with the assistance of Lighting Group Head Steve Johnson.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Lab's USPS Mailbox Will Not Return

The U.S. Postal Service mailbox located near the cafeteria that was removed due to damage by an automobile accident last December will not be replaced, according to Berkeley's Postmaster General. Because the Post Office came to the Lab solely to empty that box, it was determined that limited resources did not allow continuing this service.
