NOVA Program Explores
'Ghostly' Neutrinos
The Public Broadcasting System's NOVA science program will feature a show tonight on "The Ghost Particle," which explores the 70-year struggle so far to understand the most elusive of all elementary particles, the neutrino. NOVA filmmakers follow scientists into the laboratory, revealing astonishing footage of bizarre experiments. Several initiatives that Berkeley Lab researchers have worked on, including SNO, KamLAND, AMANDA and IceCube, are also mentioned. The program airs locally at 8 p.m. on KQED (check local listings for channel).

Lab's Health Services
Accreditation Extended
Berkeley Lab Health Services has been notified of a three-year extension of its accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), reflective of achieving the highest quality standards published for occupational health service. This accreditation follows a multi-year quality improvement process led by Connie Grondona, RN, during which clinic systems were documented and 14 quality improvement studies addressed clinic functions. Clinic staff and programmers managed by Jeff Willer (IT Division) created a new policy and procedure database, which is now being used in other areas of the Lab. "I'm pleased and proud of this achievement, and the contributions of all of my staff," said Peter Lichty, Site Occupational Medical Director.
IT Division Helps CSEE
Upgrade Computer Lab
The Center for Science and Engineering Education (CSEE), which oversees the Lab's K-12 and college science education outreach, has struggled along with mismatched and out-of-date computers in its lab. But thanks to the efforts of staff in the Information Technology Division, they now have several slightly used but newly refurbished computers. Through the Workstation Standardization and Centralization initiative, nine computers no longer being used by the Operations Division were spruced up and presented to CSEE. The "new" machines feature the latest software and operating systems, and can automatically receive the latest security patches. Estimated cost for new equipment would have been $15,000.
