Reveal Aging Secrets

Campisi

It was hormones that drew Judith Campisi to study science: her own hormones, that is. "I went to an all-girl Catholic high school," she laughs, "and I decided I'd had enough of the girls. I wanted to be where the boys were, and the boys were in the sciences." Campisi is now a life scientist at Berkeley Lab. Her research focuses on cellular senescence, a condition in which aged cells cease to divide. She discovered an enzyme marker unique to senescent cells, which shows how these replicatively exhausted cells accumulate in aging organisms, including humans. Full story.

Two Nonresident Tax
Workshops in March

The Lab's Payroll and International Researchers and Scholars Offices will conduct two nonresident International tax workshops in March. Attendees will get an overview of tax forms, tax treaties, and resources, and can also get answers to visa questions relating to nonresident taxation issues. The first session is Thursday, March 2, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. The second is Thursday, March 30, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., same location.

Logout to Enable Shared
Access to Web of Science

The Lab's Library has a license that allows five concurrent users to access Web of Science, the online scientific citation database, at any one time. Users are advised to logout upon completion of a search. Keeping a session open ties up a licensed seat for up to 60 minutes, and prohibits another user's access.

Making Progress
On Breast Cancer

For the last two years, scientists across the country have been working together in a highly collaborative effort to uncover the links between exposure to environmental pollutants, puberty, and development of breast cancer. Several of them recently shared updates on their research at a conference sponsored by the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Centers (BCERCs) — a collaboration between UC San Francisco and Berkeley Lab. Among those speaking was Berkeley Lab life scientist Paul Yaswen, who is using human breast epithelial cells to define molecular events and cellular characteristics that allow tumor progression. 'Wimmer' gold nugget

The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley is celebrating its 100th birthday with a special exhibit of items from its massive collection, including such precious items as the "Wimmer" nugget that started California's Gold Rush, the first photograph of Mark Twain, and possibly the library's most valuable item: the Codex Fernández Leal, a mid-sixteenth century pictographic scroll that describes warfare, conquest, and sacrificial ceremonies in Cuicatec, Mexico. The exhibit runs through Dec. 3 at the Berkeley Art Museum. Go here for more details, including admission costs and hours.
