Library of Congress
Gets Ready for 'IRENE'

spacer image
Library of Congress officials are hoping that an experimental image workstation will speed the digitization and preservation of 78 RPM shellac and acetate records. Berkeley Lab physicists Carl Haber and Vitaliy Fadeyev developed the system, Image, Reconstruct, Erase, Noise, Etc. (IRENE) to help preservationists restore at-risk recordings and improve audio quality. IRENE will generate high-resolution digital maps of the grooved surface of recordings, allowing preservationists to remove debris and extraneous sounds that contribute to the deterioration of recordings. Sequencing May Help
Limit Oil Dependency

spacer image
The key to kicking the nation's oil addiction could very well lie in termite guts, canvas-eating jungle bugs and other microbes genetically engineered to spew enzymes that turn waste into fuel. Scientists and several companies are working with the creatures to convert plant waste into sugars that are easily brewed into ethanol. Those microbes or their genetic material can be used to produce ethanol-making enzymes, so scientists at the Joint Genome Institute are now sequencing their genes in hopes of finding a key to ethanol production. Designers Discuss Future
Of Ethernet Technology

spacer image
Bennett
Scaling Ethernet to new heights and developing 10G Ethernet for copper wiring and internal system backplanes were among the chief issues at last week's DesignCon conference in Santa Clara. Customers and producers of Ethernet say the need for scaling the technology to 100Gbps and for a 100 Gigabit Ethernet standard is approaching faster than expected. Berkeley Lab network engineer Michael Bennett, who spoke at the conference, said the bandwidth needs among his peers here and at other Department of Energy labs and among carrier networks will soon call for a 100Gbps standard. Lab Energy Efficiency
Group Updates Website

The Energy Efficiency Standards (EES) Group, part of the Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, is launching an updated website, timed with the Department of Energy's announcement (Jan. 31) of its five-year plan for appliance energy efficiency standards. The new site offers information about analysis of national energy-efficiency standards on appliances, equipment, and lighting products, for which EES has played a historical role. The site also features other projects in which EES staff is active. Go here to view the updated site, and here to read about the DOE's new energy efficiency standards.
