Infrared beamline manager Michael Martin, left, Bajt, and Bradley

ALS Beamlines Analyze
Stardust Comet Samples

Some of the first specks of comet stuff ever brought directly to Earth have arrived at the Lab's Advanced Light Source. Last week John Bradley and Saša Bajt from Lawrence Livermore Lab began infrared spectroscopy at beamline 1.4.3, and Andrew Westphal and colleagues from UC Berkeley, Stanford, and SUNY started near-edge spectroscopy at beamline 10.3.2. This week Berkeley Lab chemist Mary Gilles will be among those performing x-ray microscopy at beamlines 11.0.2 and 5.3.2. The groups are working with specimens tens of nanometers thick, sliced from the first six particles extracted from Stardust's aerogel collectors. Stardust news is updated frequently here.

SAFETY NOTE

Don't Hang Up
On Mistaken 911 Call

spacer image
Because employees at the Lab have to dial a "9" to make outside calls, on occasion, the numbers "9-1-1" are mistakenly dialed and emergency personnel are contacted. When this happens, callers should stay on the line and let emergency personnel know that the call was misdialed. This prevents the dispatch of units to the location of the call.

Darwin

Yesterday was Charles Darwin's 197th birthday and around the world people are celebrating the milestone with "Darwin Day" activities. To commemorate the contributions of the man who brought us the theory of evolution, the UC Berkeley campus is hosting an open house at their Essig Museum of Entomology tomorrow. Visitors can take guided tours and enjoy birthday cake while viewing displays of insects, orchids and Galapagos finches. The museum is located in Wellman Hall and will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Go here for more information on other related activities.

Gift to Help Prepare

Bechtel
Berkeley Lab will be enhancing its science education outreach in the Bay Area, thanks to a $100,000 gift from Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr, former chairman of the Board of Directors of The Bechtel Group engineering and project management firm. Rollie Otto, head of the Center for Science and Engineering Education, said the funds will be used "to bring real scientists, real science tools and standards-based science investigations to elementary and middle school students. The grant stemmed from Mr. Bechtel's concern that students were losing interest in science and mathematics. And Berkeley Lab is responding to this concern." Full story.

Yoga Class Now
Offered After Work

spacer image
In addition to the noontime classes currently offered around the Lab, the Yoga Club will now have one after work, for those who prefer to stretch in the evening. Lab employee Inna Belogolovsky (Materials Sciences) will teach the class from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., in Building 70-191, starting March 16. As with all yoga classes, the cost is $12/class for drop-in or $10/class when four or more are purchased. Go here to read a brief profile of Belogolovsky (see "Faces at the Lab").

U. of Chicago Bids For
Both Fermilab, Argonne

spacer image
Shank
The University of Chicago, faced with having to bid to retain its long-term management of Argonne National Laboratory, is seeking to win a similar contract with Fermilab. And although the University may be the lone competitor for the Argonne contract, former Berkeley Lab Director Charles Shank told the Chicago Tribune that, as in Berkeley's case, "Having no competitor isn't wonderful." A member of the Argonne governing board, Shank said that in competing against yourself, "you have to work harder." Full story (requires registration).
